As we have gathered feedback from the 2018 VisionAmerica Summer Conference, a few things have stood out.
First, Dr. Jim Marbourg and his live panel received rave reviews. We are really thankful for everyone who participated! Second, physician burnout is real. As many of you know, we sent out a brief survey at the conference and one of the questions asked the recipient to rate their level of burnout on a scale of 1-10. This is where things got interesting!

8/22/2018 0 Comments A Follow Up on Uveal MelanomaOne of the highlights from our summer conference was the presentation by our own Dr. Michael Eddins on uveal melanomas.
With the recent surge of interest coming out of Auburn, Alabama, we asked Dr. Eddins to provide a quick summary of his talk for those who were not able to attend. By Dr. Michael Eddins VisionAmerica Birmingham First, let me say that it was great meeting so many of you, our referring doctors, at the 2018 VisionAmerica Summer Conference! I am really looking forward to serving you and your patients! Now, onto uveal melanomas! Uveal melanomas are the most common primary malignant tumor of the eye. It has an annual incidenceof 3-10 cases per million and increases with age and peaks around age 70. Susceptibility factors include Caucasian race and light eye color. VisionAmerica is proud to continue its diamond-level partnership with the Alabama Optometric Association (ALOA)! The ALOA currently includes over 400 licensed optometrists throughout the state and focuses on advocacy and enhancing the professional knowledge and skills of members and their staffs. Speaking of the partnership, VisionAmerica Regional Vice President, Jim Marbourg, said, "We partner with the ALOA because it makes great 'patient sense' to do so. "Alabama optometrists can give higher level care because the ALOA helped support the cause of legislation allowing the prescription and administration of therapeutic pharmaceutical agents. Subsequently, we provide more comprehensive care to our patients and are better team members with the medical specialists with whom we share our mutual patients." VisionAmerica is truly excited to extend this partnership and looks forward to continued work alongside the ALOA. 8/15/2018 0 Comments August Photo of the MonthA nine-year-old had a baseball hat thrown at him and was hit in the eye by the bill.
This resulted in a choroidal rupture, traumatic optic neuropathy, and a retinal tear. Presenting visual acuity was finger counting. On behalf of our team at VisionAmerica, we want to thank all of you who attended our 2018 Summer Conference!
For those of you who couldn't make it this year, you were truly missed! The weekend was filled with great conversation, fantastic vendors, and some truly amazing speakers! A few highlights of the conference included: by Paul Batson, O.D. Center Director VisionAmerica of Birmingham I took a copy of Gino Wickman's book, Traction, on my most recent vacation. (Thankfully, this vacation was a lot better than the one I wrote about last year.) There are very few books that I read where I finish up and think ‘Wow, that’s a really good read,’ but this is one of them. This book was released in April of 2012 and is where Wickman logged the details of his now famed Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS). Don't let the name fool you! I found multiple principles in this book that could be applied to any business regardless of age or size. In fact, we, as doctors, have all likely known the five common frustrations Wickman identifies for entrepreneurs in the introduction of the book. Do any of these sound familiar?
