4/25/2017 0 Comments how to manage milleNnialsDo you know what's tough? Discussing Millennials, Baby Boomers, and Generation X without hurting everyone's feelings.
But here is the good news: Whether you are a millennial or raised a millennial, we have all contributed to these changes we face in the workplace (Yes, even you blame-shifting Millennials are at fault!) To understand a solution, you first have to understand the generational changes that have occurred. Numerous books have been written and scores of "experts" have offered their opinions, but perhaps none better than Simon Sinek.

NATIONAL DNA DAY
Next Tuesday, April 25th, commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project in April of 2003 and the discovery of DNA's double helix in 1953. One goal is to encourage students, teachers and the public to learn more about genetics and genomics. You can read more about it here. Two good links for your patients to learn or brush up their knowledge are: http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/ and https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/primer The latter is a very current PDF booklet they can read or download called "Help Me Understand Genetics." You have all most likely heard the story and watched the cell phone footage of the highly disturbing, forced deboarding of Dr. David Dao from United Airlines Flight 3411 on Sunday, April 9, 2017. If you already have, please forgive us for the brief recap.
A United flight crew had to get to Louisville, Kentucky and to make room for them, four paying customers would have to deboard the plane. To solve the issue, United initially offered $400 to those willing to deboard and then upped the ante to $800 when no one took the offer. Still, with a plane full of customers who preferred to stay put, United took things into their own hands. A couple was told that they had been selected to deboard and got up and left the plane. When Dr. Dao's name was called, however, he did not move. You can click here and see Dr. Dao being forcefully removed from the plane. He hit his head on an armrest and was rendered unconscious prior to being drug off the plane by his arms. 4/6/2017 0 Comments Maximizing refractive outcomesWe have all had that patient...
Prior to surgery, they are complaining about poor vision, difficulty driving at night and difficulty reading. Their best corrected vision is 20/80. After surgery, you look at the chart and know that this will be a quick one-week post op visit. The patient is doing well with UCVA of 20/30 which improves to 20/20 with +0.50-1.25x175. As you enter the exam room, the first thing the patient asks, "Did they put in the wrong lens? Why am I not seeing better?" You immediately think (but don't dare say), "Are you serious?" It all started on Monday, February 27th, 2017...
Indiana resident Brad Reid's wife, Nanette, was fired from one of the South's greatest institutions: The Cracker Barrel. Unable to get the answers he was looking for, Brad did what any man in the 21st Century would do. He asked "why" on his on personal Facebook page. He also asked one and all to go to Cracker Barrel's corporate Facebook page and ask them the same question. Brad himself eventually made it over to the Barrel's page and asked himself. Things have since gotten out of control. (Seriously. Go to Cracker Barrel's Facebook page and just read the comments. This page has been hijacked by vigilantes who are seeking #justiceforbrad'swife!) One thing we can probably all agree on is that hiring and managing employees is no easy task. If you lose one or have to let one go, where do you find the next one? For the sake of Brad and his wife, we thought we would write a short piece on the ways people are currently looking for new jobs. If you are looking for a new employee, here is where you should start. |
