When asked what she would do differently, Dr.Shelleigh Buckingham's answer was clear: "I would probably ask for help sooner. It's not so bad to ask for help. I'm learning that at almost 50! Put your pride away and ask for help. Sometimes it can be done discreetly, but it's important."
A member of the 2000 graduating class of the UAB School of Optometry, Dr. Buckingham met her then-husband, Todd, as they both pursued their degrees and, upon graduation, they set out together to start a practice in Moody, Alabama. "We established our first practice and, in 2006, acquired another office in Springville. I stayed in Moody and Todd went over to the new location," said Buckingham. "In 2012, we actually got a divorce, but nothing really changed. We still worked together. He was my best friend. "Todd and I were at a CE together in 2016. He was complaining of heartburn and wouldn't let me take him to the hospital," continued Buckingham. "He went home and his girlfriend called me later on and said he wasn't feeling well. I rushed over and the paramedics were at the house when I arrived. Todd died at the house that afternoon."

We touched on the "why" of this topic briefly back in May of this year (click here to read!), but it always seems to come back up.
Let's be honest: it's easy to toss out advice on getting rid of bad apples quickly while picking new ones off the tree, but it rarely works like this in the real world. Hiring good people, retaining great employees, and firing those that don't fit in (for whatever reason) are all difficult things to do and that is unlikely to change any time soon. Remember back when you only got job applications through the classified ads in newspapers or by peer referral? Yeah, those days are long gone. As a business owner, performance reviews just feel like something you should do, right?
At the end of the year, you should sit down with your employees, give them feedback on the job they have done, and give them goals for the upcoming year. But who has time to do that? And do performance reviews work? Are you even doing them correctly? The process itself can be a bit daunting, but if you are doubting the effectiveness of employee performance reviews (and how to conduct them), our goal today is to help! |
