As we have gathered feedback from the 2018 VisionAmerica Summer Conference, a few things have stood out. First, Dr. Jim Marbourg and his live panel received rave reviews. We are really thankful for everyone who participated! Second, physician burnout is real. As many of you know, we sent out a brief survey at the conference and one of the questions asked the recipient to rate their level of burnout on a scale of 1-10. This is where things got interesting! Out of 39 response to the question, the average burnout rate was 39!
This means two things:
Regardless of the faulty scale, it is clear that physician burnout is a real threat to doctors. (Click here to read our piece titled "Three Ways to Combat Physician Burnout" from earlier this summer.) An additional question on the survey asked the recipient what their current biggest challenge is in their practice. Over 35% of respondents noted that time management was their biggest challenge while 31% said work/life balance. These are two factors that have huge implications on physician burnout. In an effort to continue the discussion on this topic, we have asked Dr. Marbourg to gather another panel specifically focused on the topic of physician burnout. "I believe physician burnout may be the biggest threat to doctors today," said Dr. Marbourg. "The demands on the doctor are only increasing as technology develops and something has to be done. We want to start that conversation now." We are currently ironing out all of the details, but this panel is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, October 16, at 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcasted live via Facebook.
