7/26/2018 0 Comments Uveal Melanoma in AlabamaWith the recent increase in discussion of uveal melanomas in Alabama, we thought it would be a great time to review the diagnosis and treatment options. Many of you have likely read the Department of Public Health announcement on the topic or you may have seen the Facebook groups with people who have ties to Auburn. Uveal Melanoma, which typically affects five in one million people, has been diagnosed in five individuals who either attended or worked at Auburn University. As of May 3, 2018, a reported 316 cases of uveal melanoma had been reported among Alabama residents from 2006 to 2015.

It is no secret that the world of insurance is changing at a rapid pace.
We have discussed the burden this places on healthcare providers and patients, but the recent story of Yarushka Rivera poses new questions for us all and should remind us of the preeminence of patient care. In October of 2012, the family of Yarushka Rivera sued Walgreens, their primary care doctor, and his practice group alleging the wrongful death of their daughter. The question before the court: Does a pharmacy have an obligation to help a patient be sure that insurance will cover a prescription? Practice leadership is one of the most challenging things about being a doctor. Managing a staff, budgets, patient schedules, hiring, and practicing medicine are just a few of the tasks that make up the job description. One of the most important things any doctor can do is to clearly define the vision and mission of his or her practice. Helping them do that is something Dr. Mike Rothschild has made a mission of his own. We caught up with Dr. Rothschild ahead of his lecture at the 2018 VisionAmerica Summer Conference to discuss practice ownership, the importance of mission and vision statements, and to get a brief preview of his upcoming talk in Prattville, Alabama. We hope you enjoy it! 7/17/2018 0 Comments How Do You Lead Your Practice?Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, is considered to be one of the best and most dynamic leaders in the world.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally courted her to come to Facebook from Google and help him run the operation. She knows leadership. Speaking on the topic, she says, "The ability to learn is the most important quality a leader can have." You may be thinking, "But I learn all the time! I read, study, attend CEs, etc.!" But do we, as leaders, take time to learn more about leadership? The default for many leaders today is to resort to "team building" or a "my way or the highway" approach when it comes to improving the performance of their employees, but, as we all know, this rarely yields the desired results. There has to be a better way, right? VisonAmerica is excited to announce the addition of Dr. Michael Eddins to our physician staff. A native of Columbiana, Alabama, Dr. Eddins graduated summa cum laude from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He then went on to complete his medical degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine and ophthalmology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Eddins is a published author and has presented numerous presentations on a variety of topics including Patient Safety and Quality Improvement. "I am excited on getting to work with everyone on the VisionAmerica team to help provide excellent care to the patients of Birmingham and surrounding cities," said Dr. Eddins. Dr. Eddins will be joining the VisionAmerica team in August providing cataract and anterior segment services.
Passionate about quality patient care and a love for the ability to restore vision through cataract surgery, he will make a great addition to our team of doctors. VisionAmerica of Birmingham's Center Director, Dr. Paul Batson, commented, "As we've continued to grow, finding quality individuals with great surgical skills is critical to our ability to support our referring doctors. Dr. Eddins fits that criteria. In addition to great surgical skills, he is an all-around great person who provides compassionate care and communicates well with patients and referring doctors. We're excited to have him join us". Who knew the Most Interesting Man in the World would be speaking at the 2018 VisionAmerica Summer Conference? We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Dr. Larry Delucas as he wrapped up his time at the Open National Bowling Tournament in Syracuse, New York. Seriously. The man is a doctor, astronaut, and a competitive bowler. He even has his own Wikipedia page! The interview below discusses Dr. DeLucas' journey from UAB to NASA, his mission in space, what projects he is currently working on and his upcoming lecture at the 2018 Vision America Summer Conference. We are certain you will enjoy it! |
