5/29/2018 0 Comments Be Slow to Hire, Quick to FireThere is really no consensus on who coined the saying, "Be slow to hire, quick to fire," but regardless of its origin, there is no shortage of opinion on the phrase.
Some use it as a guiding light for their business while others view it as a severe approach to management. We are going to presume that this statement wasn't meant to be taken at face value. Very few successful managers would recommend that you take years to fill a position or fire someone as soon as they make their first mistake, but there is value in the sentiment expressed here.

O.D., FAAO VisionAmerica of Birmingham A seven-year-old white female was referred to our office for an evaluation of a nodule on the conjunctiva of her right eye. The patient reported mild irritation from the lesion but denied significant pain or other symptoms. The lesion first appeared ten days prior to my initial examination. The referring optometrist had initiated treatment with prednisolone acetate 1% TID. The patient and her parents reported that had only slightly improved the size of the lesion, but it was still about the same. The patient was a healthy seven-year-old with an unremarkable medical history and review of systems. She was not taking any prescribed medications, except for the prednisolone acetate, which had been tapered to QD dosing. by Paul Batson, O.D.
Center Director VisionAmerica of Birmingham I walked into the exam room to a patient with glaring eyes, crossed arms and a frustrated look on his face. I looked at my watch and knew that I wasn't running behind (I was actually a little ahead of schedule.) and was puzzled because he was a new patient coming to me for a second opinion. Everything that he didn't say, immediately said to me that this wasn't going to be easy. There are obviously several different ways any of us could respond to a situation like this. 5/16/2018 1 Comment E-Cig's and AMDby Paul Batson, O.D.
Center Director VisionAmerica of Birmingham It doesn't take much to see Vaping shops popping up all around. According to Business Service News, "The global e-cigarette market size is estimated to be around $15 billion in 2017, will grow at a CAGR of 27.3% during 2018-2023 and is forecasted to attain a value of $70 billion by 2023." [1] I had a call a few months ago from a referring doctor asking about the recommendation of E-Cigarettes and Macular Degeneration. To be honest, I hadn't thought about it very much and started asking around. I even posted a poll on our Facebook page to gauge what people are recommending. We seem to be all over the place and it's hard to find a solid recommendation. So... I (along with Dr. Rod Nowakowski) started doing some research and this is a quick summary. 2018 VisionAmerica Annual Summer Conference

Center Director VisionAmerica of Birmingham I have talked with several doctors over the past few weeks and we've had a lot of calls from billing staff regarding denials for post-op care of cataract patients. With the Palmetto conversion, there are definitely some changes in billing requirements that need to be considered. As such, if you have not paid much attention to your Medicare patients cataract post-op reimbursement lately, you may want to take a look! (Editor's Note: Gerriann Fagan spoke at our 2017 VisionAmerica Summer Conference and received rave reviews from the attendees. We are so excited to have her periodically contributing to our content! If you enjoy the piece below, please reach out to her and let her know. You can learn more about Gerriann and the work she does at Warren Averett by clicking here!) I recently attended the Alabama MGMA Meeting in Birmingham. While at our booth, a woman whom I'd known years earlier introduced me to her colleague as, "someone who has always been an advocate for our practice." I felt complimented. Wow, was I an advocate for her medical practice? They provided good medical care for me and my family, but I wondered what I did and what they did that made her feel that I was their advocate. |
