3/27/2019 0 Comments Throwback Thursday: Tecnis Symphony® Patient Testimonial: "These New Lenses Are Awesome!"I recently had lunch with one of our referring doctors and listened as he shared the success that he had with quite a few patients who had received extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL's.
Combine this conversation with a recent patient who was literally dancing in our hallway with excitement after her cataract surgery and EDOF lenses and it made me think of this conversation that we shared 2 years ago this week. From the archives, we decided to share a Throwback Thursday. We hope you enjoy it! Paul Batson, O.D. Center Director VisionAmerica of Birmingham At VisionAmerica, our goal is to be a true resource to your patients. One of the ways we feel we can achieve this is by providing you access to the best and newest technologies on the market. A big part of this is looking ahead and seeing what's next. It is no secret that a large portion of the population in the United States is entering senior citizenship. Within the next 10-15 years, the United States Census Bureau predicts that 59.8 million Americans will be between the ages of 66 and 84 years old. With this aging of the citizenry comes many challenges, but the most prevalent may be decreasing vision and other issues of the eye.

(Note: We always try to listen to feedback and requests from our referring doctors and were recently asked if we could provide some phone tips for the front desk. The piece below is part one of two in response to this request. If you have any other topics or areas of interests we can address in our weekly emails, please let us know! We would love to help in any way possible!)
Although technology seems to be rapidly changing things around us, some things have simply stayed the same. An example would be your practice's dependence on the telephone. Sure, some practices have the capability of online appointment booking, but the vast majority of new patient bookings and follow-up confirmations still take place via the phone. (And the older your patient-base is, the more reliant your business is on the phone!) Paul Batson, O.D.
Center Director VisionAmerica of Birmingham Like we've all seen many times, I had a patient a few weeks ago that was on three glaucoma medications, yet I was still struggling to keep things under control. Her visual fields and OCT's were progressing despite my best attempts. She had previously undergone a laser trabeculoplasty with minimal success and really needed that next level of treatment. It was only about five or six years ago that our next option was trabeculectomy. Fortunately, we now have a variety of other options as part of our minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) toolbox. I thought it would be good to share a few thoughts on some of the procedures we have available and consider them for some of these patients who need additional treatment. 3/18/2019 0 Comments Practice Benchmarks - Part 1(One quick note: A good thing to keep in mind as we walk through these industry standard financial benchmarks is that they can be both helpful and harmful. The intent here is not to overwhelm you by showing you how far below the standard you are, but instead to encourage and help you improve your practice's financial situation if it is needed.
And if your practice is in excellent financial shape, congratulations! We would love to hear any tips or tricks you might have!) On the popular CNBC show The Profit, multi-millionaire and business expert Marcus Lemonis travels all over the United States to help struggling businesses. Every episode starts the same way: Lemonis shows up and spends time with the owners and their team and then asks for their financials. If you have ever watched the show, you know the quickest way to get on Lemonis' bad side is to not know your numbers. Why? Because your numbers are the lifeblood of your business and the age-old saying, "If you don't measure it, you can't improve it," certainly applies to your financials. 3/14/2019 0 Comments March Photo of the MonthThe photos below are of a 34-year-old male with Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy.

Center Director, VisionAmerica of Birmingham John (not his real name) came to see me several months ago for a second opinion. He is truly one of the nicest guys that you could meet but was pretty frustrated. He had undergone cataract surgery at another practice here in town and was not happy for two reasons. First, as a previous -2.50, he was miserable with his loss of near vision. Second, he had this persistent dark shadow he was seeing temporally since his surgery and it wasn't getting any better. As I examined John, everything really looked good. He was 20/20 uncorrected at distance and had a plano refraction. His cornea was clear and he had a well-centered posterior chamber IOL. Upon dilated examination, he was found to have a completely normal retina. "What are you on the Enneagram? I bet you are a one or a three."
Questions like this are becoming more and more common as the craze of the Enneagram fad continues. In case you haven't heard of it, the Enneagram is a personality tool that classifies individuals into one of nine personality types. (Links to take the test for free are in the conclusion of this piece!) It is one of the many tools available that can be used to better understand both ourselves and the people around us. Specifically, it can be used to increase both employee engagement and the performance of our practices. |
