When asked what she would do differently, Dr.Shelleigh Buckingham's answer was clear: "I would probably ask for help sooner. It's not so bad to ask for help. I'm learning that at almost 50! Put your pride away and ask for help. Sometimes it can be done discreetly, but it's important." A member of the 2000 graduating class of the UAB School of Optometry, Dr. Buckingham met her then-husband, Todd, as they both pursued their degrees and, upon graduation, they set out together to start a practice in Moody, Alabama. "We established our first practice and, in 2006, acquired another office in Springville. I stayed in Moody and Todd went over to the new location," said Buckingham. "In 2012, we actually got a divorce, but nothing really changed. We still worked together. He was my best friend. "Todd and I were at a CE together in 2016. He was complaining of heartburn and wouldn't let me take him to the hospital," continued Buckingham. "He went home and his girlfriend called me later on and said he wasn't feeling well. I rushed over and the paramedics were at the house when I arrived. Todd died at the house that afternoon."
