It is no secret that hiring has never been more challenging. In our recent piece on finding new talent, we noted that the current unemployment rate is 3.8%, which makes the odds of you finding unemployed individuals with experience in optometry slim to none. But the challenges don't stop there. Gallup's 2017 State of the Workplace notes that a "record 47% of the workforce says now is a good time to find a quality job, and more than half of employees (51%) are searching for new jobs or watching for openings." Our goal at the VisionAmerica Summer Conference is always to provide you and your team with relevant information that will improve the overall performance of your practice.
Keeping this goal in mind, we are excited to have Michelle Wenegar, Director of Human Resources for the SEES Group, VisionAmerica, and their affiliated entities speaking at this year's conference to provide some insight into how we can overcome the current challenges in the job market to build and retain a quality team. Discussing the content of her upcoming lecture titled, HR Myths and Musts: What You Need to Know, Wenegar notes the goal is to "review some of the recent changes in employment law and guidance. I want to pass on resources to make our referring doctors aware of these changes and reduce their chances of triggering a government audit and other missteps that could result in litigation or exposure from an employment law standpoint." When asked about the human resources challenges facing the industry as a whole, Wenegar noted the nation's low employment rate and the difficulty of sourcing and retaining quality candidates, but added two additional unique insights. "Many practices are extending offers to potential new hires, which are being accepted and then rejected due to them receiving more money from a competitor," she said. "This, paired with changing guidelines that no longer allow us to prevent employees from discussing their pay creates a difficult environment for human resources." According to Wenegar, adaptability and a proactive approach might be the most important thing a practice can develop and this will require changing the way we approach human resources. "Ultimately, practices will have to examine some of our old school ways and change them in order to compete in a competitive hiring market," she said. "How do we become an employer of choice and retain employees even if there is a job that offers $0.25 more per hour down the road? This is what I want to explore during my presentation." Wenegar has a diverse background in Human Resources which has created a well-rounded perspective on what is needed to maintain the delicate balance between treating employees fairly and reducing potential liability to the employer. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and holds both the PHR and SHRM-CP certifications. Her specialties include Benefit Administration, Recruitment & Selection, Employee Relations, and Training for Managers & Supervisors. She has a proven track record in creating operational efficiencies, mentoring high-potential team-members, and delivering results. We are thrilled to have Michelle as a presenter for our office manager track at the upcoming conference and hope you make plans to join us!
