It all started on Monday, February 27th, 2017... Indiana resident Brad Reid's wife, Nanette, was fired from one of the South's greatest institutions: The Cracker Barrel. Unable to get the answers he was looking for, Brad did what any man in the 21st Century would do. He asked "why" on his on personal Facebook page. He also asked one and all to go to Cracker Barrel's corporate Facebook page and ask them the same question. Brad himself eventually made it over to the Barrel's page and asked himself. Things have since gotten out of control. (Seriously. Go to Cracker Barrel's Facebook page and just read the comments. This page has been hijacked by vigilantes who are seeking #justiceforbrad'swife!) One thing we can probably all agree on is that hiring and managing employees is no easy task. If you lose one or have to let one go, where do you find the next one? For the sake of Brad and his wife, we thought we would write a short piece on the ways people are currently looking for new jobs. If you are looking for a new employee, here is where you should start. If you are looking for a new employee, here is where you should start.
1. LinkedIn Linkedin is one of the fastest growing social media platforms. (Yes, it is considered a social media platform.) In fact, two new users join every SECOND. There are two types of pages, business and personal, and the vast majority of job seekers will utilize LinkedIn to see what opportunities are available in their field. It is particularly popular with younger generations. The downside to LinkedIn is that most members do not fully maximize their profiles. It doesn't have to be this way with your business page, though. Your page should be loaded with attractive pictures and quality content. When you post a new job opening, this is the window through which the applicant will see your business. The posting needs to be informative and attractive. If you write poor descriptions, you will get a poor pool of applicants to choose from. There is ton of great information on the web about how to build a quality LinkedIn business page. Yes, it costs money to run job postings online, but finding the right applicant always saves money in the long run. 2. Facebook Your business should have a Facebook page. Maybe later we will discuss the creative ways you can use it to benefit your business, but, for now, just know you should have one and it should be active. One of the best ways to take advantage of your Facebook business page is to post job ads. But beware! You better bring your A game if you are going to grab someone's attention on Facebook. One of the benefits is that you will be getting your ad in front of a ton of eyes. The drawback to Facebook is that you are also competing with the most recent news on Aunt Betty's thyroid. It's tough... 3. Indeed Indeed is a true job search engine. It differentiates itself from LinkedIn by not having individual profiles, though it may be shifting in that direction. This site is strictly for job postings. This site gets some serious traffic. We are talking 442 million page views from the United States each month. (It has a high global usage rate as well.) Job seekers flock to Indeed and it is a cost effective way to post your new openings. As we have mentioned above, the copy on your job postings needs to be top notch and as informative as you can make it. 4. Classifieds The classifieds are worth mentioning. You can reach out to your local newspaper or al.com and post your available positions. If you are looking for more experienced (older) applicants, this will be your best bet. 5. Referrals Do you have a few employees that you wish you could clone? If so, those are the employees that you want to ask and see if they have friends who are looking for a new job. People typically recognize the skills that make them successful and do a good job of noticing them in others. You will want to be careful here. If the employee that you are on the fence about brings you a resume, it's probably best you file that one in the trash can. There you have it. A brief overview of the best job search tools available right now. If you know a manager at Cracker Barrel, pass this along to them. If you end up hiring Nanette Reid, don't fire her. It's not worth it... Do you have any tips or tricks to offer? We would love to hear them and work them into our next piece.
