We are back with our most recent "Get to Know" session with the staff at VisionAmerica. As always, this one is interesting. One thing we didn't expect to hear when we set down with Dr. Jeffrey Fuller was, "As a college student, I traveled Europe as a scholarship dancer." You just never know where the conversation is going to end up. We hope you enjoy this interview with VisionAmerica's Dr. Fuller. Where did you grow up? Glendora, California. Near Pasadena. Where did you go to medical school? I went to undergrad at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah, and medical school at UAB. I came to UAB because of the MD and Ph.D. program. In the end, I decided not to pursue the Ph.D. program. Why did you choose a vitreoretinal fellowship? I actually became interested in retina before ophthalmology. My first exposure to eye care was retina and I did an ophthalmology residency so I could become a retina specialist. I chose retina because the first time I looked at the fundus I found it to be a whole new world. The second I saw a retinal surgeon shoot a green laser strapped to his head into a patient's eye, I was hooked. It was really cool. Dr. Jeffrey Fuller What is the most interesting thing that most people don't know about you? As a college student, I traveled Europe as a scholarship dancer. I was part of the folk dance ensemble at BYU and made the team that got to tour. We did shows in Scandinavia and Russia in addition to tours to California and New York. So were you in tights? Nooooo. No tights. Something else interesting, I'm very well acquainted with the Romney family. I know Mitt and his wife well. Also, I'm an Ironman triathlete (May of 2012) and avid cyclist so, I may need to amend my comment about tights, since I'm sporting spandex several times per month. Tell us about your family. My lovely wife Laura is a native Alabaman. She went to Brookwood High School and grew up near Vance. We have six children. Five boys and one girl. What is one of the most interesting cases you've seen lately? I have a case of Eale's disease I've been treating for a while. I also have a young man with an optic disk pit with a newly symptomatic retinal detachment related to it. I'll be performing surgery on it soon. He is 20/150 and has some large pockets of fluid. What kind of cases do you really enjoy seeing? My son is a type-1 diabetic so I gravitate toward diabetics with significant retinopathy and try to help nurse them back to a quality level of vision. That is gratifying. Favorite book you've recently read? The Mistborn series Game of Thrones series Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell What's your favorite radio station? Sports talk radio. Finebaum is entertaining and I find him to be pretty straight up the middle on national college football news. Any favorite tv shows?
There you have it! All you ever wanted to know about VisionAmerica's Dr. Jeffrey Fuller. We hope you enjoyed it!
