One of the things that we felt would be good is to share a little more information about some of our doctors. We recently sat down for lunch with Dr. Kristin Madonia and this Q&A was our first attempt at helping you get to know our doctors more. As you will see below, you never know what you're going to learn when you sit down for a "Get to Know You" session with one of VisionAmerica's doctors. We don't think you'll be disappointed. Check out our first edition of "Get to Know Dr. _____" below. Where did you grow up? Louisiana. North of New Orleans. Where did you go to medical school? LSU Why did you choose plastics and neuro fellowship? Do you want the real answer? I couldn't stomach doing cataract surgeries for the rest of my life. Although some days that's what I wish I was doing. One of the main reasons I veered away from that is because the patients have unrealistic expectations. I chose ophthalmology because I enjoyed the relationship with the patients. I felt it was more personal as opposed to other specialties. That's also why I was drawn to neuro and plastics. Specifically, I really enjoy the challenge of neuro ophthalmology. Had you not chosen ophthalmology, what would you be doing today? My second choice would have been accounting. Or maybe an ultrasound tech? Stay at home mom? Radiology? I don't know... Tell us about your family. My husband and I met when I was in medical school. During our seven years of marriage, combined we have completed two residencies (He's a nephrologist.), two fellowships, moved three times, started five jobs, and had three beautiful children along the way. We have two boys, ages three and five, and an 18-month-old daughter. I am hoping we are in Birmingham for good. What do you like to do in your spare time? That's funny... What is the most interesting thing people don't know about you? I really enjoyed gymnastics as a child and had the opportunity to train one summer under US Olympic coach Béla Károlyi. What is the most interesting case you have seen lately? I saw an interesting conjunctival mass a few weeks ago. I was concerned that she could have lymphoma as she had a preauricular lymph node and cervical lymphadenopathy. Fortunately, she did not have a lymphoma, but was diagnosed with cat scratch and responded well to antibiotics. What kind of neuro cases do you enjoy seeing? I enjoy the cases that I can solve or find a cause for their neurological deficit. What kind of plastics cases do you enjoy seeing? Ectropians and Entropians because the patient benefits significantly from the procedure. What is one thing that makes your job easier? I always appreciate having one-on-one communication with referring doctors about particularly difficult patients. That is always helpful. What is the best book you have read recently? Resisting Happiness by Matthew Kelly. I am currently listening to How Children Succeed by Paul Tough. Hint: The answer is character development. How to cope with difficulties in life and pursue the things you want to pursue. We hope you enjoyed reading our first "Get to Know Dr. _____"
